Iggy and the Stooges have announced their first U.S. concert date this year! The band will headline Riot Fest in Chicago on September 16th. Tickets are on sale now and more information is available at RiotFest.org.

On April 21st, Iggy Pop celebrated part of his birthday and Record Store Day at the seventh annual Sweatstock festival in Miami, Florida. As Record Store Day ambassador, Iggy showed his support for Sweat Records and record stores. Here are some great images below, courtesy of Lolo, and a cool recap from Sweatstock.

“All popular music forms of today get their strength from the beat. Rap, hip-hop, metal, pop, and rock producers will tell you that the beats they use imitate the human heartbeat and that is where the power lies. The feeling of listening to any of these forms is always some variation on excitement, but before the birth of the blues there was another form of popular song, in which the timing comes from the human breath and the feelings are much more about emotion. These older ways of expression were known variously as bel canto, chanson, plainsong or just folk music. I’ve always loved this other feeling, one that is intimate, sometimes a little sad, and does not try to beat me on the head. So I wanted to sing some of these songs myself, hoping to bring the feeling I felt as a listener to my listeners through my voice. Many of these songs are in French, probably because it is French culture which has most stubbornly resisted the mortal attacks of the Anglo-American music machine.“

Tomorrow is Iggy Pop’s birthday, and Henry Rollins has written a tribute to him in his LA Weekly column. Here is an excerpt below. Henry also will air an all-Iggy show this Saturday, 8-10 p.m., on 89.9 FM KCRW.

From the ’60s to this moment, Iggy Pop has been a solid reminder of what happens when an artist stays true to himself only and doesn’t give a damn about the rest of it. For this, there is a price to be paid, and most of us cannot and would not have the stamina or the sheer guts to foot the bill.

Elvis Presley has been crowned “the King of Rock & Roll” by someone somewhere, and apparently, it has stuck. That’s fine, kings are swell. I have always maintained that Iggy Pop is the Heavyweight Champion of Rock & Roll.

In our lifetime, there will be no other like him. There is no one alive in music who has been battling the forces of nature like Iggy. Nope, sorry, not Mick Jagger, who, in all his uncontested greatness, has left only a small fraction of the blood onstage that Iggy Pop has. Anyone else? I’ll answer — no, there is not.
